Finally, the Opicina Tram resumes service, after 8 years of hiatus, connecting Trieste and Opicina once again!
The Opicina Tram is the last remaining funicular still in operation in Trieste. This historic tram has been taking locals to the village of Opicina (on the Karst plateau) since September 9th, 1902, climbing the steep slopes of the Scorcola hill (with a maximum incline of 26%), offering unique and scenic views along the way. The Opicina Tram is the perfect way for a wonderful day trip (especially if you're bringing a bicycle, as the service offers special accommodations for this).
For first-time riders, we recommend getting off at the Obelisk dedicated to Emperor Francis I of Austria, and continuing on foot along the beautiful Napoleonica Path, which follows the ridge with breathtaking views.
A song dedicated to the Tram’s many adventures (which have sometimes humorously affected its service) is by Trieste's Lorenzo Pilat, called "EL TRAN DE OPCINA", which lightheartedly tells of its misfortunes.
