🌬️ Trieste and the Bora: An Indissoluble Pairing
🌍 Trieste is known worldwide for its legendary wind 🌪️ that, without obstacles, cold and impetuous, lashes the sea 🌊 and weaves through the alleys of the old town 🏘️: THE BORA. 🤯 Anyone who encounters it might be struck by it, so we strongly recommend 🧥 preparing to face the gusts, which, in certain parts of the city, can reach significant speeds.
🍃 The Bora is an integral part of Trieste, so much so that it aligns with certain traits of its inhabitants—initially rough and fleeting, just like this beloved wind. When it blows, it purifies the air of impurities and humidity, gifting ❄️ cold but bright days 🌞 with incredible views 🏞️.
📖 In this guide, we will explore activities to do in Trieste on a Bora day, identifying:
🌬️ Sheltered areas from the wind
And the more 🌀 exposed ones.
📍 It’s important to know that the Bora predominantly blows from East-Northeast, invading the city and sweeping away everything in its path! 🪁
🔗 In some parts of the old town, you can still see "chains" ⛓️ attached to sidewalk poles, especially near the windiest intersections. 🚶♀️ Here, the Bora, on its most intense days, put (and still puts) pedestrians in great difficulty, who literally cling to these supports to stay on their feet! 🪢
🌳 Although the Bora manages to blow freely throughout the city, there are zones unexpectedly sheltered: true "safe zones"! These areas are located under the karst edge, near some of the most beautiful walks 🥾 Trieste has to offer its tourists!
Routes
🌬️ The first 3 routes we’ll explore are urban routes 🚶♀️🚶♂️. As mentioned, the Bora descends from the Karst 🌄 and channels from east-northeast until it reaches the city 🏙️. 🌊 The entire seafront area is particularly windy:
-
The shores 🌅,
-
Piazza Unità d’Italia 🏛️,
-
And the bold pier 🚤 are some of the Bora's favorite spots, with gusts easily exceeding 120 km/h 💨.
❓ How to behave in these cases? If you spot a Triestine, follow their steps and movements 🧍♂️➡️🧍♀️. The Triestine is accustomed from birth to anticipate the "Bora gust" 🌪️: they feel it coming, and their body prepares to face it 💪. 🌧️ The "master" level? When rain is added to the Bora! In this case, forget about using an umbrella ☂️: it will become useless with the first gust. 🧥 On Bora days, the only solution is to:
-
Equip yourself with a good waterproof jacket 🧥,
-
Visualize your goal 🎯 and reach it as quickly as possible 🏃♀️💨!
💨 If the first 3 urban routes are for those who want to challenge themselves and experience being "hit" by the wind, the other 3 routes are extremely panoramic walks 🏞️ (outside the city), completely sheltered from the wind 🌳.
🌟 In particular, the Napoleonica, reachable by tram 🚋, is easily walkable in its first part. 🏔️ However, upon reaching the Monte Grisa sanctuary and leaning out over the ridge 🌁, we might once again be at the mercy of the wind 💨. 🍃 But, if we avoid the slope and venture into the woods 🌲, we should escape the dreaded gusts from the Karst.
🌿 The Salvia Trail and the Rilke Trail, on the other hand, have no windy spots: they are always covered and protected 🛤️—no gusts to worry about! 😊.
