Description

Caffè Tommaseo is the oldest café in Trieste. It was opened in 1825 and named after Paduan owner Tommaso Marcato but was later renamed Tommaseo in honour of the Dalmatian linguist, writer and patriot. The café is located on the city's seafront, a few metres from Piazza Unità d'Italia, next to the church of San Nicolò dei Greci, which has always made it a meeting place for traders, artists and intellectuals. A commemorative plaque on the side facade bears witness to the café’s becoming the most representative place of Trieste's irredentist movement.
