Description

Caffè San Marco is another must-see for visitors to Trieste. It is located a few metres from the Synagogue and the large tree-lined pedestrian avenue (Viale XX Settembre) that connects this part of the city to the Grand Canal area. The café, which was inaugurated in 1914, still maintains its historical charm, as enhanced by the well-kept bookshop inside. It has historically been frequented by poets and intellectuals, and it has borne witness to a number of important events in the history of Trieste, Italy and Europe, including a violent attack at the hands of the Austro-Hungarian army, which destroyed the interior after discovering the cafe was being used to produce false passports for Italian irredentists.
