Description
Located in the immediate back of Piazza Unità d'Italia, the old Jewish ghetto of Trieste is a restricted area in the heart of the historic center.
Enclosed by high walls and with three entrances, the ghetto initially counted about one hundred people who then, thanks to the Edict of Toleration issued by Joseph II in 1784 which established religious freedom, mixed with the rest of the population building synagogues and schools outside the ghetto, up to 6000 people in 1938, the year in which the racial laws were promulgated in Piazza Unità d'Italia. In the streets of the former ghetto are still visible evidence and traces of the past, especially in the names of alleys (such as Via delle Beccherie and Largo Riborgo that recall 2 of the 3 ancient ghetto doors) and antique stores that populate the area.
