Description

Next to the Molo Audace is a white Aurisina marble staircase that descends to the sea.

The staircase, which is known as 'royal staircase', was built on the occasion of King Victor Emmanuel III's visit to Trieste in 1922.

At the sides of the stairs, there is a double bronze installation depicting the two moments when Trieste returned to Italy: on one side, you can see the bersaglieri waving the Italian flag in 1918, and on the other, the Trieste girls (known as mule) intent on mending the Italian flag in 1954, when Trieste returned to Italian rule after being divided into Zone A and Zone B and forming an independent state known as ‘Free Territory of Trieste’ at the end of the Second World War.
