Description
🪖 Today’s tour takes us to the Kleine Berlin:
the largest complex of underground air-raid tunnels from World War II still existing in Trieste.
đź’Ł The air-raid shelter known as Kleine Berlin (Little Berlin) is now open to visitors
and is divided into two separate sections:
a public air-raid gallery for the civilian population of Trieste
and a German military shelter, composed of a main tunnel and several side branches.
⚙️ The Kleine Berlin was built in 1943 under the direction of SS General Odilo Globocnik,
also responsible for converting the Risiera di San Sabba into a concentration camp —
the only one of its kind in Italy — where political prisoners, Jews, and partisans were held
before being deported to Auschwitz.
🪖 The Kleine Berlin served as the German command center for the Upper Adriatic,
where all strategic and organizational operations for the area were to be managed.
🚪 Hidden behind a small door in Globocnik’s office was a trapdoor leading to the garden of his villa,
and from there, to a square-shaped well (later filled in after the war)
that connected directly to the Kleine Berlin.
🔦 Through another underground passage, it was even connected to the cellars of the courthouse.⚖️
