Roman Theater

The Roman Theater of Trieste lies at the foot of the Hill of San Giusto, behind Piazza Unità d'Italia, and symbolizes one of the best preserved testimonies of the Roman Tergeste.

Built in two different periods, the Theatre was enlarged at the beginning of the II century A.D. in order to increase the number of spectators up to 6,000. Over the centuries, as a result of some looting and the growing need for urban space, the whole area was filled up with small medieval dwellings, which were then destroyed in the Thirties during an extensive work of redevelopment that allowed to bring to light the steps, the stage and the part dedicated to the orchestra. The findings have also helped to reconstruct the profile of the city in different eras and to discover that the theater, in addition to being outside the city walls, was originally built practically on the seashore.
