Description
Founded in 1900, the Pirona confectionery was particularly renowned for the quality of its sweets, including the typical Presnitz, Putizza and Pinza. The pastry shop is located in the lively area of Largo Barriera and stands out for the elegance of its Art Nouveau style. The original wooden sign is still displayed on the outside, while inside you can still find the original machinery from the end of the 19th century, as well as brass and cherry wood furnishings. The café became immediately popular with intellectuals such as Umberto Saba, Italo Svevo and James Joyce, the latter in particular being practically at home there, given that he used to live just a few metres away. In view of its great historical/cultural value, Pasticceria Pirona officially became a 'historical establishment' featuring its own sign in 1994.
