Description
The Church of San Spiridione is the most colourful and magnificent emblem of Trieste's multiculturalism. It is a symbol of the city's large Serbian Orthodox community, and it is a wonderful example of Byzantine architecture. Its sparkling colours are strikingly beautiful: witness the blue covering the four bell towers and the large central dome and the white walls decorated with golden mosaics, which stand out among the buildings on the Grand Canal. As tradition dictates, though, the most beautiful part of the building is the interior, with its wealth of decorations reaching the highest levels, including oil paintings, gilded icons and hanging silver chandeliers that seem to sparkle when the sun's rays touch their surface.
