Description
Located in the heart of the old city of Trieste, the Arch of Riccardo is a Roman gate of the I century A.D., and is part of the walls of the ancient Tergeste, built under Emperor Augustus in 33 B.C.). To its name are attributed several legendary origins that recall Charlemagne, or Richard the Lionhearted. Others, instead, lead it back to an alteration of the term "cardo": the main roads that characterized the scheme of the ancient Roman cities. The Arch of Riccardo is located in Piazza Barbacan, a space between the houses of the Old Town, a place much loved by the people of Trieste, rich in bars and outdoor events.
